The university was established based on the Six-Point Formula of 1973, which aimed to promote educational and social development in the region. The first vice-chancellor was Gurbaksh Singh, an organic chemist from Banaras Hindu University, who served from 1974 to 1979. The initial chancellor was Shri B D Jatti.
In January 2015, the University of Hyderabad was honored with the Visitor's Award for the Best Central University in India, recognizing its academic excellence and contribution to higher education.
