Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, also known as SVNIT or NIT Surat, was established by the Parliament of India in 1961. It is one of the premier National Institutes of Technology (NITs) recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.

University Status

In recognition of its academic excellence and contributions to technical education, the Central Government, upon the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), declared SVNIT as a "Deemed University" on December 4, 2002. This status was further elevated when SVNIT was designated as an "Institute of National Importance" on August 15, 2007.

• 1961: Established as SVREC, offering undergraduate programs in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering.

• Anchor Institute: SVNIT serves as the Anchor Institute for the Auto and Engineering sector, contributing to workforce training and development within the industry.
• Center of Excellence: The institute is designated as a Center of Excellence under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP), focusing on water resources and flood management. This initiative is supported by the World Bank, highlighting the institute's commitment to addressing critical national challenges.
• Upgrade to NIT Status: Following the HPRC's recommendations, the Government of India upgraded the RECs to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in 2002. As a result, SVNIT was granted Deemed University status on December 4, 2002, with approval from the UGC and AICTE.
• Institute of National Importance: On June 5, 2007, the Parliament of India passed the National Institutes of Technology Act, officially designating SVNIT as an Institute of National Importance effective August 15, 2007.
