The National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) was established as the Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela on August 15, 1961. The land for the institute, approximately 1200 acres, was provided by Biju Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha. The foundation stone was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.
In 2002, NIT Rourkela was granted autonomy and now operates independently under the Ministry of Education, becoming one of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in India. This transition marked a significant step in its evolution as a premier engineering institution.
