Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), formerly known as Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College (MNREC), is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India. Establishment: MNNIT was established in 1961 as one of the first Regional Engineering Colleges in India. It has evolved over the years and gained significant recognition in the field of engineering and technology.
Pioneering Programs: MNNIT holds the distinction of being the first institute in India to introduce an undergraduate program in Computer Science & Engineering in the academic year 1976-77, setting a precedent for other institutions across the country.

Inauguration and Development
The main building of the college was inaugurated on 18 April 1965 by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Initially, the institute offered bachelor's degree programs in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Notably, in 1976, MNNIT became the first institution in India to introduce an undergraduate program in Computer Science and Engineering.
In 1982-83, additional undergraduate programs in Electronics Engineering and Production and Industrial Engineering were introduced. By 1970–71, postgraduate programs commenced with master's degrees in various engineering disciplines. The institute also offers MTech, MCA, MSc Mathematics, and Scientific Computing courses, alongside PhD registration.
Recognition and Growth
Recognized by the Government of India as a center for quality improvement in Civil and Mechanical Engineering, MNNIT expanded its offerings by introducing a two-year postgraduate degree in Management Studies in 1996. The institute further diversified by adding undergraduate programs in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology in 2006.
Innovative Initiatives
In 1972, the college established an industrial estate with 69 sheds to promote entrepreneurship and generate additional revenue. The institute also became a member of the Indo-UK REC project, establishing a Design Center at a cost of about ₹6 crores to provide training and consultancy.
Institute of National Importance
On 15 August 2007, MNNIT was granted the status of an Institute of National Importance (INI), solidifying its role in the landscape of higher technical education in India. The institute celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2011.
Technological Advancements
MNNIT is among the few technical institutions in India equipped with two supercomputers, PARAM 8000 and PARAM 10000, showcasing its commitment to advancing research and technological capabilities.
