Founded in 2009, IIT Indore is one of the eight new IITs established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. This act also converted the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), into an IIT.
The amendment bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 24 March 2011 and the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012. The foundation stone of IIT Indore was laid on 17 February 2009 by Arjun Singh, the then HRD minister of India. Initially, the institute operated from a temporary campus within the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore. During this period, IIT Indore functioned under the mentorship of IIT Bombay, with Dr. Pradeep Mathur serving as its founding director.
The first batch of students from IIT Indore graduated in 2013, and the institute held its first Convocation Day on 8 June 2013. The institute saw new leadership when Dr. Suhas Joshi, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Dean of Alumni & Corporate Relations at IIT Bombay, was appointed as the new director, succeeding the officiating director, Dr. Neelesh Kumar Jain.
